The Thimbles Summary
Influence
The book in one sentence
A handful of mental shortcuts help us make fast decisions in a busy world, and anyone who understands those shortcuts can trigger them on purpose to get us to say yes.
Who it's for
Marketers, fundraisers and salespeople who want to persuade ethically, and anyone who has bought something and wondered afterwards why they agreed.
The big idea
Cialdini, a social psychologist, studied persuasion in the lab and then went undercover in sales training courses, fundraising teams and advertising agencies. He found that most effective tactics fall into six categories: reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority and scarcity. Each rests on a rule of thumb that usually serves us well, such as returning favours or trusting experts. The trouble is that these responses fire almost automatically. Cialdini compares them to fixed patterns in animals, such as mother turkeys that will care for anything making the right chick-like sound.
