The Thimbles Summary

Crossing the Chasm

The book in one sentence

New technology products often stall after their first enthusiastic buyers, and the way across that gap is to win one narrow market segment completely before trying to win the mainstream.

Who it's for

Founders and marketers selling innovative products, especially B2B technology, and anyone puzzled by why early excitement didn’t turn into mainstream sales.

The big idea

Moore builds on the technology adoption life cycle, a bell curve of buyer types. First come the innovators, who love technology for its own sake. Next are the early adopters, visionaries who buy to gain a big leap ahead of competitors. Then come the early majority, pragmatists who want proven solutions. After them are the late majority, conservatives who buy only when they must, and finally the laggards, sceptics who resist. Moore’s insight is that there is a deep gap between the visionaries and the pragmatists. Pragmatists don’t trust visionaries as references. They want to see other pragmatists like them already succeeding. So a product can win early fans and then simply stop selling.
