The Thimbles Summary

The Innovator's Dilemma

The book in one sentence

Great companies often fail because they are well run: they listen to their best customers and chase the best margins, and that leaves them blind to cheaper, simpler technologies that start at the bottom of the market and work their way up.

Who it's for

Leaders of established businesses, strategists, investors and founders trying to understand how a small newcomer can beat a powerful incumbent.

The big idea

Christensen separates two kinds of innovation. Sustaining technologies improve existing products in the ways mainstream customers already value. Established firms are very good at these, even when they are radical and expensive. Disruptive technologies are usually worse on the measures that matter to mainstream customers, but they are cheaper, simpler, smaller or more convenient. They first appeal to small or new markets. Then they improve until they are good enough for the mainstream, and the incumbents who ignored them are left behind.
