The Thimbles Summary
Hard Goals
The book in one sentence
Goals that are merely sensible rarely change anything; the goals people actually achieve are ones they care about deeply, can picture vividly, feel they must start now and find genuinely challenging.
Who it's for
Managers setting goals for teams, individuals who keep setting resolutions that fade, and anyone who has used SMART goals and found them tidy but uninspiring.
The big idea
Mark Murphy, founder of the leadership training firm Leadership IQ, argues that the problem with most goals is not how they are measured but how little they matter to the person pursuing them. SMART goals help with planning, but they do not make anyone want to get out of bed. Drawing on research into motivation, the brain and goal-setting, he proposes that strong goals have four qualities. They are Heartfelt, Animated, Required and Difficult, which gives the acronym HARD. Get those right at the start, he says, and following through becomes much easier.
