The big idea
Acres of Diamonds began life as a lecture. Russell Conwell, a Baptist minister, Civil War veteran and lawyer from Massachusetts, delivered it thousands of times across America, and the fees helped him build what became Temple University in Philadelphia. The talk opens with a story an old guide told him while travelling in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the man who bought his farm notices a curious stone in the garden stream, and the land turns out to sit on one of the richest diamond deposits ever found. Conwell’s point is simple: the riches were there all along, but Ali Hafed never looked.
